Turn back the clock and travel through time when you visit the one-of-a-kind museum known as Lawson's Emu-Z-Um. Located in Grand View, this offbeat museum may just be one of the most fascinating yet strangest places you visit in the state.
The whimsical name of the museum was inspired by the 100 or so emus that the owners once raised at their ranch. There are still a couple emus left, but over the years the ranch has transformed into something entirely different—an Old West museum.
The Emu-Z-Um describes itself as a family friendly historical museum that is devoted to the early settlement of Owyhee County and southern Idaho. Boasting a gigantic collection of artifacts from the late 1800s, this place resembles a time capsule of an era that has long passed.
The diverse collection features everyday items like clothing, kitchen gadgets, vehicles, farming equipment, and so much more. It's a wonderful glimpse into how early Idahoans lived.
You'll even stumble across an authentic replica of an 1860s town, complete with wooden sidewalks and picture-perfect storefronts. Be sure to take a picture at the town jail!
Soon after arriving, it will become evident to you that the museum is a true labor of love. What started out as a collection of early artifacts grew and grew until it became an entire museum's worth of treasures. Thousands of items are exhibited and seeing them all could take at least a few hours.
Admission to the Emu-Z-Um is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Tours are conducted on weekends during the regular season (March-September) but are provided by appointment only in the winter season (October-February).
This strange museum is one of the last things you'd expect to come across way out here in the middle of nowhere. However, you'll be so glad you did. Pay it a visit and treat yourself to a better understanding of early Idaho life.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. As you drive on Interstate 15 between Pocatello and Blackfoot in southern Idaho, you’ll pass Fort Hall. Many individuals know this community as home to the Shoshone-Bannock Casino and Hotel, but it is so much more. Nearby is the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum, a unique museum in Idaho that tells all about the tribe’s culture and history. It’s a place where you can learn and explore and is the perfect road trip stop.

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum is a hidden gem in southern Utah. Located on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, this incredible museum will bring Native American history to life.
Inside you’ll find all types of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the Native American tribes, including photos that take you back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This museum is unique because none of the tribal artifacts on display were excavated for the museum. Rather, they were donated by members of the community.
However, there are exhibits that tell about the early days of Fort Hall and the surrounding area. These exhibits do contain excavated items.
One of the most popular exhibits is Boris the Buffalo. Boris once lived at the Ross Park Zoo in Pocatello and when he passed, he was preserved and given to the tribe as a gift.
In the summer months, a live buffalo from the tribe’s herd is brought next to the museum for viewing.
After you have spent time viewing the exhibits and artifacts in the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum, you can browse the museum store to check out all types of tribal music, calendars, postcards, jewelry, and other items made by Shoshone-Bannock tribal members.
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum always deserves a visit. It is a road trip stop that you'll never regret making.
