Here at OnlyInYourState, we love bridges. Historic bridges, scenic bridges, terrifying bridges — we love them all. One bridge that is unique and quite peculiar is found right here in Idaho. The Cedar Street Bridge, located in downtown Sandpoint, is not only a bridge over Sand Creek, but it is also a one-of-a-kind marketplace with restaurants, boutique shops, local artisans, and more.
The Cedar Street Bridge was built before the 1930s as an auto and pedestrian bridge. It was designed to connect Sandpoint’s downtown area to the train depot on the east bank of Sand Creek.
However, by the late 1970s, the bridge was quite damaged and no longer in use. Fortunately, in the early 1980s, Scott Glickenhaus, a local entrepreneur, had the idea to transform the bridge into a public gathering space. While the project certainly had its ups and downs, today, the bridge is home to shops, restaurants, and more.
As you explore this public market, it is hard to believe you are actually on a bridge. The walkway is narrow, but you'll find shops and restaurants on all sides as you make your way across this remarkable structure.
As you shop, you will find more than a dozen locally-owned shops and all types of Idaho-made products. You certainly won't want to rush your visit!
There are also several places where you can stop to enjoy a meal or even a glass of wine.
You can even bring your entire family along as there are places for the kids to play and let out some energy.
Cedar Street Bridge also hosts several community events from live music to "girls' night out" shopping parties.
Regardless of whether you visit this marketplace bridge in Sandpoint to visit a specific shop or you simply want to walk around and explore a little, you’ll find that Cedar Street Bridge Public Market in Idaho truly is one of a kind.
