One hobby I've developed over the last few years is visiting museums and we certainly have a lot of great museums in Georgia. From historic home museums that feel like a step into the past to small buildings devoted to ultra-specific topics, it's wonderful to get out of the house and learn something at the same time. While cities like Savannah and Atlanta are famous for an array of museums covering every subject imaginable, there are plenty of other museums worthy of a visit in other cities throughout Georgia. One of the best museums in Columbus, GA is not nearly as well-known as it should be: the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. Check it out:
Fittingly, the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center is located not far from Fort Moore. Known as Fort Benning until the name was changed in 2023, Fort Moore is one of the largest military bases in Georgia.
This sprawling museum is the country's only one devoted to the American Infantry. The campus is massive and contains several memorials, including a Memorial Walk of Honor and a Vietnam War memorial.
One of the best things about the National Infantry Museum is the lengthy time period it covers.
The galleries here display artifacts from the American Infantry dating from colonial times all the way to the present.
There are life-sized dioramas set up within the museum that provide an in-depth look into battles throughout the years.
There's an amazing array of artifacts on display here, made all the more incredible by the fact that there's no admission fee here.
A suggested donation of $5 is highly recommended so that the museum can continue to offer world-class programming.
While it's easy to spend all day at the museum, it's definitely recommended that you budget at least two to three hours for a self-guided tour.
This place is huge and covers a lot of topics!
In addition to a giant screen theater, you can also experience a virtual reality combat simulator.
