It's always fun to explore those spots in Florida where there is history but also where nature has begun to reclaim the space. This is likely what you'll find when you visit the abandoned bridge over the Suwannee River in Florida. What has been labeled the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Live Oak is an abandoned structure that is no longer in use as a bridge and has seemingly been forgotten by many. However, there is still beauty offered here especially as it's considered a hidden gem by many, especially those who favor the long-forgotten but beautiful.
The Suwannee Springs Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere” in Live Oak, Florida is a hidden gem that has become abandoned over the years.
The bridge is owned by the state of Florida and was completed in 1931 by Austin Brothers Bridge Company. The bridge was a critical component of the area, serving as the primary road for many years.
However, the bridge eventually closed down to road traffic as an updated bypass bridge was built in 1971. While there is no possibility of vehicular traffic ever crossing the bridge again, it does still stay open for pedestrians and bicycles.
But what really makes this bridge so spectacular is that the rusted steel patina is still as beautiful as ever, plus the fact that it spans a calm area of the Suwannee River.
Many visitors have taken to creating graffiti on the bridge, which depending on who it is you ask, either elevates the space to become something straight out of your imagination, or has ruined the space forever.
People visit from all over to walk the bridge and take videos and photos of all of the colors, drawings, and tags.
While the future of this bridge remains unknown, guests should plan a visit sooner than later in case the bridge becomes just a memory down the road!
