Nothing says summer fun quite like a boardwalk. Though we mostly associate them with the beach here in wet and wild Florida, boardwalks can be found in all kinds of environments. Whether you're looking for a romantic stroll, a walk down memory lane, or a new adventure, visiting Florida's top five boardwalks will be the highlight of your summer.
1. Hollywood Beach Broadwalk
That's right, it's a BROADwalk, meaning this 2.5-mile multi-colored brick path is designed to be wide enough for plenty of people to stroll or ride bikes. It's often named among the best boardwalks in the country due to its unique design, the stunning beach scenery, and the plethora of shops and restaurants to visit.
2. John's Pass Village & Boardwalk, Madeira Beach
This stunning boardwalk is perfect for family vacations. Every kind of water activity is available here, from fishing charters to parasailing. You'll also have over 100 shops and restaurants to choose from. Here you can find a perfect grouper sandwich or sample sweet and citrusy blends from the Florida Winery. To make the trip really special, book a cruise on the Pirate Ship at John's Pass.
3. Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples
The 2-mile boardwalk twists and turns and leads hikers back to ancient, natural Florida. The forest of Bald Cypress here is the largest left in North America. You can spot alligators, raccoons, white-tailed deer, and a variety of native birds. If you can stand the heat, visit in the summer to catch a glimpse of the rare ghost orchid (bring binoculars).
4. Destin Harbor Boardwalk
Tons of shops, restaurants, attractions and activities can be found here, including fishing charters, sunset cruises, and even a zip line. You can also catch some fireworks on Thursday evenings. It does get fairly crowded in the evenings, so visit in the daytime for a more family-friendly vibe.
5. Harbor Walk at the Key West Historic Seaport
To truly experience all that Florida has to offer, you have to experience Key West. This seaport is the original heart of it all, inhabited by local fishermen for almost two centuries. Today, it's a water-lover's dream. You can find any kind of excursion or activity, from deep-sea fishing to diving, on the Harbor Walk. There are also several restaurants with the freshest seafood money can buy.
