Did you know that the 4th largest house in the United States is located right in Delaware? Winterthur, the largest DuPont Estate, contains 96,582 square feet of floorspace, making it over 6500 sq feet larger than the fifth house on the list. Amazingly, Winterthur has been turned into a museum that houses one of the most expansive and important collections of Americana in the country, and you can visit to see the incredible architecture yourself.
Most visitors to Winterthur spend their time in the gardens.
They're meticulously maintained over the 60 acres they take up, featuring stunning French landscape architecture and a fairy garden for children. The grounds at Winterthur are among the most stunning in the state, but the home itself is the real treasure.
Almost a hundred thousand square feet of splendor are there for you to explore.
Almost every one of the 175 rooms is available to tour Monday–Sunday, 10:00 am–5:00 pm. Plan to be lost in the mansion for hours - in fact, the last house tour tickets are sold at 3:15, because the museum staff knows you'll be exploring for a while.
Each room is decorated as it was when it was originally inhabited.
Winterthur was the former home of Henry Francis du Pont, who built it in the early 1900s.
The collection of American history is equally impressive as the original architecture.
With just about 85,000 objects on display, you're sure to discover something new every time you visit. Though the Winterthur mansion seems frozen in time, there are so many hidden gems that will catch your eye each time you walk through a room.
The majority of the objects on display span more than 200 years of American arts.
Including an incredible collection of art, decor, furniture and more, built and created between 1640 and 1860.
It's easy to imagine the DuPont family taking up residence here.
Many of the rooms look like they have been untouched since Henry DuPont moved out and dedicated the space as a museum in 1951.
The Winterthur Mansion is still hosting their incredible Yuletide event until January 9th.
Go to see the splendor of Christmastime as if you've stepped back to the early 1900s - with elaborate decor and tradition on display! After the Yuletide closes, the Museum spends months restaging and will open again on March 1st.
Visit Winterthur at 5105 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807. Before you go, check out their schedule of events here to plan the best trip you can.
