Did you know that a well-preserved relic of the Civil War is floating right in the waters of the Delaware River? Come visit Pea Patch Island, where you'll feel like you've traveled back in time, and take a tour of the historic and haunted Fort Delaware.
Fort Delaware State Park is by far the most unique park in Delaware. This gorgeous decommissioned army fort was once an active Civil War prison!
The Fort was part of a "triangle defense" of the Delaware River, and sat ready to intercept any ships looking to sneak into Northern ports.
Though it's on Pea Patch Island and is an uncommon "island fort," it was far from the tropics and conditions here were harsh. Today, visitors can learn all about the happenings and hauntings of the fort thanks to its preservation as a Delaware State Park.
Because the fort is on Pea Patch Island, you'll have to take a ferry to get there. The fun starts when you step aboard and start learning all about the history of this island prison.
The ferry ride is fun for kids and adults alike! You'll board at the dock in Delaware City and enjoy a short ride to the island that sits right in the middle of the mighty river.
All throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons, the docents, staff, and re-enactors share their knowledge and demonstrate various skills that were put to use at Fort Delaware when it was still used as an army outpost.
You'll find all sorts of relics of the Civil War here... including some spirits that seem to never go away.
During the war, conditions at Fort Delaware were terrible for soldiers and prisoners alike.
In fact, more than 3,000 souls died here during the Civil War. Perhaps that's why the fort has a long history of paranormal activity! In September and October, you can participate in a ghost hunt to experience the hauntings for yourself.
