Delaware is one of the oldest states, and therefore has some of the oldest cemeteries in the entire nation. These eight graveyards are spooky enough to give you pause before entering - lest you be haunted by the ghosts of unsettled souls! If you are brave enough to visit, be sure to be respectful of the grounds and of those trying to find their eternal rest.
1. Old Swedes Church Cemetery, Wilmington
Old Swedes Church is one of the oldest buildings in Delaware, and the cemetery on the grounds dates back to the late 1600s. It is also home to one of the oldest cemeteries in Delaware. After more than 300 years, it seems these souls have found a quiet resting place - but sometimes, walking through, you'll hear a sound carried through the air. It could be the wind, or it could be an early settler, seeking eternal rest.
2. Lakeside Cemetery in Dover
Lakeside is a creepy Delaware cemetery, right in the heart of Dover. Old and new graves are laid out throughout the grounds.
3. St. Joseph on the Brandywine, Greenville
This cemetery lies in the shadow of trees just steps from the Brandywine creek. I always get a creepy feeling when I drive past this cemetery, like there's something a little peculiar in the air.
4. This Cemetery in Lewes
Just looking at these historic gravestones makes me wonder what kind of lives these Delawareans lived, and if they would be proud of the progress Delaware has made.
5. Coffee Run Cemetery
Coffee Run Cemetery is the burial ground from Delaware's first Catholic Church. Here lie over 50 known deceased and 12 anonymous Delawareans. This cemetery has been plagued over the years, and both the original keeper's house and barn have been burned to the ground. The remnants of the barn still stand, adding to the creepiness of this Delaware cemetery.
6. Long Cemetery, Frankford
The haunted Catman's Grave is in the middle of this spooky Delaware cemetery. The figure will appear as you lurk around his grounds, and tinker with your car so that you may not be able to leave.
7. St. Peter's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Lewes
Lewes is one of the most historic Delaware towns, so it's no wonder that the graves in this cemetery date back hundreds of years. St. Peters itself dates back to the early 1700s, so this church and cemetery are truly a Delaware landmark.
8. Brandywine-Wilmington Cemetery, Wilmington
The Resurrection tree at the Brandywine-Wilmington Cemetery gives hope to survivors that their loved ones are in a safe and peaceful place now, no longer suffering from what plagued them in life. It also makes for tremendously spooky pictures, like this one.
