It’s not every day that you come across an architectural gem that makes you think of one of the most magical places in literary history. But something about the Grand Opera House in Delaware reminds us of the coolest wizarding school in all the fictional worlds, Hogwarts. Maybe it’s the architecture, maybe it’s the style -- see for yourself the similarities between this stunning building in Delaware and Harry Potter’s home base.
While it might not have the looming spires and wizards flying around playing Quidditch, Delaware’s Grand Opera House in Wilmington is giving us major Hogwarts vibes.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a fictionalized British boarding school where Harry Potter spent his time learning all of his wizarding magic.
In Wilmington, we might not have a similar castle-like structure, but the Grand Opera House is about as close as it gets. This 1,200+ seat theater and concert hall comprises four stories and some seriously special architecture.
Designed in Second Empire style by Baltimore architecture Thomas Dixon, this beautiful building incorporates symbolism for Freemasonry in the cast-iron front.
The cast iron architecture is why this opera house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It was said to be one of the last remaining and finest examples of such architecture.
Inside, the magic is still abundant, starting with the celestial murals drawn overhead in the theater.
The theater is where people congregate for shows, musicals, concerts, and so much more.
While we might not have a chance to visit Hogwarts in real life, sometimes the next best thing is an architectural gem like the Grand Opera House in Delaware.
