YouTube user The Urban Archaeologist made waves when he revealed there was an entire abandoned neighborhood in Southbury, a fact that many Connecticut residents were not aware of. His creepy video shows what appears to be a charming collection of cottages that were actually residences of Southbury Training School staff, except that they're all now completely abandoned. Curious as to how this came to be one of the abandoned places in Connecticut? Check it out below:
This place is like something out of the movies!
Was the Southbury Training School abandoned for some nefarious reason? We promise you: there was no zombie outbreak or nuclear attack here. In fact, the story is pretty simple, although it does leave you with quite a few questions.
It is completely closed off to the public and has no car access, which is why most people don't know it's there.
Southbury Training School was a school for people with disabilities. To this day, the roads are maintained, the lawns mowed, and the hydrants freshly painted, in spite of the lack of residents, and it doesn't help that it's part of a 1,600-acre campus.
There's also a semi-hidden graveyard, which doesn't seem to warrant any visitors.
The school stopped accepting new residents in 1986 and it's unclear whether or not these are the graves of former residents or not. People find it strange that this school, which once hosted thousands, is now only home to about 300 residents.
Inside the home remain some pieces of cookie-cutter furniture, similar to what you might see in the doctor's office.
The plumbing and electrical systems are still intact, and except for some dirt and leaves, it's pretty clean. That's not surprising, though, since the school independently runs its own utilities - including water and electricity.
What people can't figure out is why they've been quietly maintaining the homes all this time.
Why not sell the property, or convert it into senior living? Why keep it shrouded in a sea of trees at the end of a blocked-off road? Perhaps they plan to regrow in numbers, or perhaps there's something strange going on... Is the Southbury Training School haunted?
