The Nutmeg State is populated with bridges that take us from here to there, crossing our local waterways and some of the spans are absolutely fascinating. We have a swinging bridge in the forest, a quirky frog bridge, and a handful of charming covered bridges. But one of the most remarkable and beautiful bridges is the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge in Connecticut.
It may not seem real at first, this gorgeous gem, but there's just something about the magic of florals and man-made beauty that really leaves us in awe. Learn more about it below, and perhaps even plan a trip for yourself! This bridge is truly one of the most beautiful places in Connecticut.
Located in Simsbury, the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge in Connecticut is like a scene torn straight from the pages of a fairy tale. The bridge is adorned with colorful gorgeous flowers making it one of the most photographed places in the area.
Constructed in 1892 as a one-way crossing for vehicles, it was replaced by a more modern two-lane bridge just a bit further to the north in 1992. The bridge is now a pedestrian-only crossing.
In the mid-1990s, groups began to create a community garden on the bridge by adding bright hanging baskets and window boxes.
Through the efforts of the community, the bridge is transformed year after year from a plain waterway crossing to an enchanting pathway.
The flower bridge spans 183 feet is suspended 18 feet above the Farmington River. It currently has 62 flower boxes and 32 hanging baskets.
The bridge is in its full glory during the spring and summer months when cheerful blossoms decorate this colorful pathway.
But even during the winter months, the bridge takes on a festive air adorned with evergreens and red bows.
The Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge may not be the longest, tallest, or oldest bridge in the state but it is certainly one of the most spell-binding.
