The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, a.k.a the Fish Church, is a building that needs to be seen to be believed.
First Presbyterian Church of Stamford is an example of modernist architecture at its finest. Constructed in the late 1950s, the church and its accompanying 262-foot bell tower are awe-inspiring.
Architect Wallace K. Harrison designed the sanctuary using the fish shape that is predominant in early Christianity. Approach the exterior of the church and not only is its silhouette familiar but the building appears to have scales like a fish.
However extraordinary the outside of the building is, the real magic happens when you step inside. The uniquely patterned windows create a spellbinding effect inside the church.
Cross the threshold and a spectacular sight awaits. Light streaming through the stained glass creates a luminous work of art inside the sanctuary.
More than 20,000 pieces of faceted glass create the mosaic that turns light into a vibrant display. The enormous windows depict the story of the Crucifixion on the right and Resurrection on the left.
Look upwards and it is almost like staring into a colorful starry sky. The church is also outfitted with a large Visser-Rowland pipe organ.
