There are plenty of great museums in the Nutmeg State. We've got art museums, history museums, and science museums that can rival any in the country. But if you find yourself looking for a unique museum in Connecticut that is something you can only experience here, look no further! The American Clock and Watch Museum is a fascinating hidden gem in Bristol. It's one of very few museums in the country dedicated to horology (the history of timekeeping). They've got a massive collection of American-made clocks and watches that's one of the largest in the world. You don't have to be fascinated by clocks to enjoy a visit here.
The American Clock and Watch Museum is located in a historic home built in 1801, the Miles Lewis House. The museum was originally known as the Bristol Clock Museum and opened up in 1953.
There's a lot to see here. Checking the clock is such a typical part of everyone's daily routine that not a lot of thought goes into it. The exhibits here go into so much detail on the construction process of clocks and how they work.
The museum's primary focus is on American-made clocks and watches, but they have a variety of clocks from different countries and time periods.
Connecticut was once a major producer of clocks and watches, and there are plenty of Connecticut-made timekeeping pieces here to check out.
The use of interchangeable, mass-manufactured pieces to create clocks and watches was a major breakthrough that helped jump start the Industrial Revolution.
This is a surprisingly interesting place, and the sounds of all the clocks ticking and chiming as you walk through is oddly satisfying.
This is one museum in Connecticut that is sure to give you a great time! (We couldn't resist a pun.)
