Cemeteries in Connecticut can be spooky places - after all, they are the final home for hundreds of dead people. It's certainly no surprise, then, that rumors of ghosts and spirits often surround cemeteries. It's not at all uncommon for there to be stories about unexplained phenomena like floating orbs or strange sounds coming from haunted cemeteries. One of the most beautiful cemeteries in Connecticut that certainly has some urban legends surrounding it is Great Hill Cemetery in Seymour. This 18th-century burial ground is tucked away in the woods, and it's actually still in use today.
We think it's a shame that this cemetery is probably best known for the spooky legends surrounding it because it really is an incredibly lovely place. There's so much history surrounding this allegedly haunted cemetery in Connecticut.
You may have also heard Great Hill Cemetery referred to as Hookman's Cemetery. This nickname references the most famous ghost story that lurks around this graveyard.
If you believe the many stories and legends, Great Hill Cemetery once had a caretaker with a missing hand that had been replaced by a hook. While that image may bring to mind Captain Hook of "Peter Pan" fame, this is one story that's definitely not for children or Disney movies.
According to the stories, many years ago, this caretaker committed suicide. It is said that he hanged himself from one of the many trees that stand in Great Hill Cemetery.
Supposedly, unlucky visitors who happen to park underneath a tree in the cemetery will be alerted of the caretaker's presence. It's been reported that visitors have heard a faint tapping sound on the roof of their car, and it's thought to be the caretaker's hooked hand.
Many of these incidents are reported to have happened at nighttime, when the ghosts and spirits are more likely to be out and about. It's worth noting that the cemetery closes at sunset and entering at night is considered to be trespassing.
Have you ever heard of the legend of Hookman at Great Hill Cemetery in Seymour, CT? Do you know of any other allegedly haunted cemeteries in Connecticut? Do you believe in these stories, or do you think they're all just creepy urban legends?
