Gillette Castle State Park is one of the most visited attractions in Connecticut. It offers abundant history, stunning architecture, and breath-taking views. But many people who visit the castle don't realize that there is an abandoned train tunnel right on the property.
Gillette Castle State Park is located in the towns of East Haddam and Lyme. It is one of the more popular state parks in Connecticut.
The castle was built by William Gillette, an American actor, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage. He lived in this private residence from 1919-1937. The architecture is amazing, making you feel as though you've stepped into a fairy tale world.
The interior of the castle is equally as stunning and has secret rooms and passageways that were created by Gillette. The actor furnished the castle with unique pieces and enjoyed entertaining guests.
Gillette also loved to share his 3-mile-long narrow gauge railroad with his visitors. Guests could tour the estate on the small train.
Although the railroad no longer exists, an abandoned train tunnel which was one of the highlights of the journey is still on the property.
The tracks of the railroad have been removed and scenic walking trails created in their place.
On your journey to the abandoned train tunnel, you will cross picturesque footbridges.
The railroad trail also winds through the woods in a magical way.
Some of the guests that reportedly rode on Gillette's railroad include Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin.
You can still explore the inside of the abandoned railroad tunnel.
Visit Gillette's train station that has now been turned into a picnic pavilion.
Be sure to enjoy the majestic views of the Connecticut River while you are at the park.
Gillette Castle State Park is located at 67 River Road in East Haddam.
After you check out the abandoned train tunnel and Gillette's castle, take some time to explore these other attractions in East Haddam.
