Pagosa. Conundrum. Glenwood Springs. You know all of these spots as being the most luxurious of Colorado hot springs, and while we cannot help but love them, we also know they can be a bit crowded. If you want to get in a great soak while avoiding large crowds, visit this Colorado hot springs that you have never heard of but will want to visit.
Unfortunately, since the time of publication, this hot spring has changed ownership and is now on private land. However, there are still other beautiful hot springs in the area!
Welcome to the small town of Rico; an unincorporated town of 265 people located along the unforgettable San Juan Skyway. Rico boasts a rich mining history, gorgeous architecture, and...
...the incredible Rico Hot Springs!
Situated just north of town, the Rico Hot Springs are two small and secluded pools filled with 100+ degree water from the nearby Dolores River.
The Rico Hot Springs were first discovered by miners drilling into the geothermal aquifer in the 1970s, but these days, they are a favorite secret spot for locals to soak.
One of the pools is more developed, with wooden benches nearby, but both springs are primitive.
Unlike Conundrum, the Rico Hot Springs are free to visit and can be accessed via a short walk (and an elevation gain of a mere three feet), making it a must-visit for all ages and skill levels.
To access the Rico Hot Springs, head north on the town bridge and take a right on the gravel road.
The scenery around the springs is absolutely stunning - let's keep it that way! If you visit, respect the land, leave no trace, and carry out any garbage when you leave.
While you're in Rico, don't forget to check out the town itself, which is home to several locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, like the Rico Town Hall pictured here.
