U.S. News frequently publishes a list of the Best Small Towns to Visit in the USA, which is determined by the fun attractions, tasty restaurants, and unique character of towns with fewer than 50,000 residents. As if being included in the list wasn't a big enough honor, two of the top three spots are Colorado towns, making for even bigger and better bragging rights! Which of the best small towns in Colorado were chosen? Let's find out:
Telluride, Colorado
Telluride is quite possibly one of the most unique towns in the state and is a popular destination for Coloradans, out-of-staters, and celebrities alike.
The town was established as a silver mining camp on the San Miguel River in 1878. Pictured above is Telluride's old Brunswick Saloon, circa 1900.
Telluride is now the poster child for Colorado mountain towns, thanks to its ample outdoor recreation, historic landmarks, and charming main street. With so much scenery, it's no wonder that it's consistently voted one of the best small towns in Colorado.
Named the number ONE "Small Town to Visit in the USA," U.S. News & World Report cites the scenery, skiing, festivals, and cultural events as their top reasons for loving Telluride.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Coming in at number three on the list (just behind Jackson Hole, Wyoming) is stunning Steamboat Springs.
This northern Colorado town boasts superb skiing conditions, glorious geothermal hot springs, and a friendly, welcoming community.
Officially incorporated in 1900, Steamboat Springs has worn a number of hats over the decades, at different times housing the Yampatika band of the Ute Tribe Utes, railroaders, ranchers, miners, and ski bums.
If you think that skiing and soaking in hot springs are all that Steamboat has to offer, you couldn't be more wrong. The town of 12,000 also boasts incredible restaurants, drives, hikes, lodging, and shopping, as well as fun festivals and events throughout the year.
