When it comes to weird, it seems that Ohio has a superabundance of oddities. Newark claims the world's largest basket, Sugarcreek boasts of the world's largest cuckoo clock and Dublin has a bunch of giant corn statues, but most people don't know that there's also a truly unusual collection on display at a museum near Cleveland that deserves to be recognized for its weirdness. The stories that the artifacts tell will delight you and, quite honestly, might give you a bit of the heebie jeebies.
The Troll Hole Museum is located at 228 East Main St., Alliance.
It may not look like much from the outside, but a magical experience lies within.
This über zany museum tells the story of trolls, ranging from their role in mythology to the modern world.
One of the museum's most prized exhibits is their troll doll collection—the largest in the world.
Guinness World Records has immortalized Sigrid the Troll Queen (aka Sherry Groom, the museum's owner) for to her collection of 3,254 troll dolls.
Sigrid is an enthusiastic, brilliantly costumed, and incredibly knowledgeable host!
She began collecting troll figures as a child and simply never stopped. Her display includes several vintage pieces and even a few one-of-a-kind custom works!
Take a tour and you'll learn about the unique history of a subject we bet you've never even considered before!
It may be unusual, but there's actually an extensive and fascinating story behind these little guys. Each tour is guided, typically taking about an hour per group. With over 20,000 troll items, it is remarkable that the tour doesn't take all day!
Some of its other exhibits are a little creepy...
A dark and beautiful world of waterfalls and grottoes creates an earthy home for some trolls.
You'll discover a classic Troll Bridge, Sculpture Garden, and even a 10-foot tall Troll Mountain!
...and others displays are pretty darn cute.
Tours are both informative and fun, and these guys make great company throughout it.
While you're at the museum, you might as well treat yourself to a hot cup of coffee at the Grumpy Troll Cafe...
All beans are locally roasted and each individual cup is brewed by hand!
And don't forget to swing by the gift shop!
Goodies sold at the gift shop complement the exhibits, indulging you in irresistibly fun troll goodness.
Be sure to plan your trip today, because there is nowhere else in the world like this one unusual destination.
The Troll Hole Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they open one hour earlier on Saturdays. Surrounding yourself with trolls is actually very reasonable; Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, $6 for ages 6 to 12, and $3 for ages 3 to 5. Younger children are free, of course.
Ohio is a special state with some highly unusual attractions. The Troll Hole Museum, though, is one of the most delightfully weird features in Northeast Ohio. Have you ever visited this neat little museum? Tell us about your experience, and please share some of your favorite pictures!
