2. Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme is a North Carolina staple, as the first Krispy Kreme donut shop was opened in 1937 right up the road from Charlotte in Winston-Salem, NC. Krispy Kreme's original business model was as a wholesaler that was selling to grocery store chains in the Piedmont area. However, the smell of freshly baked donuts quickly filled the air around the shop each morning and drew in individual customers wanting to purchase donuts. This is how the infamous Krispy Kreme "Hot Now" sign came to be.
The shop owner cut a hole in an outside wall of the shop and started selling donuts to the public. When the sign was lit up reading "Hot Now" customers would know the donuts were ready for purchase.
Krispy Kreme is most famous for its signature glazed donut.
The recipe has been the same since 1945. When served hot, the soft, fried dough paired with a sticky, sweet glaze on top will melt in your mouth and delight your taste buds. Krispy Kreme is one of our great state's awesome contributions to society So if you haven't tried one of these palate pleasing treats, head out to your neighborhood Krispy Kreme as soon as possible!

3. Duck Donuts
Duck Donuts is a fantastic little donut shop located in Dilworth neighborhood. This shop also originated in the Tar Heel state down in Duck, North Carolina on the Outer Banks. After finding great success serving beach goers at the Outer Banks, Duck Donuts expanded across the state eventually bringing its tasty goodness to our Queen City.
The donuts at Duck Donuts look just as good as they taste, as they are all artfully decorated with icing, sprinkles, and toppings.
One of the local favorites is the Maple Icing Donut with Chopped Bacon. You may think this flavor sounds weird, but the combination of sweet maple syrup and salty bacon is a flavor combination you won't be able to stop thinking about after you try it.
This fall, Duck Donuts has announced an autumn donut lineup which features flavors like Cinnamon Sugar with Chocolate Drizzle, Pumpkin with Graham Cracker and Marshmallow Drizzle and Chocolate Icing with Peanuts and Salted Caramel Drizzle.
