Only San Francisco would have such an eccentric and large attraction. What is it? The original and very distinct Musée Mécanique is one of the world's largest privately owned collection of coin-operated mechanical musical instruments and antique arcade machines. Take the time to check this one-of-a-kind attraction in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf.
The Musee Mecanique is located on Pier 45 at the foot of Taylor Street in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The exact address is Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf, Shed A, San Francisco, 94133
Owner Ed Zelinsky began collecting at age 11 and his games were exhibited in the 1920s at Playland. Today, Dan Zelinnsky continues the tradition.
In 1972 when Playland closed, Musée Mécanique became a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Eventually, it moved to its current location in 2002.
You'll be overwhelmed by the plethora of antique arcade games. There are restored vintage games and displays, ranging from large and scary laughing dolls to fortune tellers to shooting games.
The main hall of the museum has over 300 mechanical machines, and is one of the largest privately owned collection of such games in the world.
The museum has many rare and historical pieces. One of the more bizarre pieces is a 6-foot-tall laughing automaton called Laffing Sal, which came originally from Playland at the Beach.
This is guaranteed fun for all ages and quite popular. More than 100,000 visitors a year visit the Musée Mécanique.
There is no entrance fee to Museee Mecanique, but visitors must pay for use of each game.
The games will bewilder you here. There are more than 300 mechanical games including: music boxes, coin-operated fortune tellers, video games, love testers, player pianos, peep shows, photo booths, dioramas, pinball machines and more.
