Northern California is so often associated with beaches, sunshine, and technology that it's easy to overlook the fact that this half of the Golden State is home to some of the country's coolest attractions. Whether you're an art geek, a wine enthusiast, or a history buff, there's something for everyone.
1. Avenue of the Giants
Even your tallest friends will feel tiny when driving through a sea of towering redwood trees. There are even trees so wide that a car can fit through a carved-out hole in the trunk. Now that's a one-of-a-kind photo op.
2. Crescent City
Experience the nautical life at this seafaring city with a spectacular waterfront. When you're done exploring the many lighthouses on display, you can even see sea lions at the Ocean World aquarium.
3. Ferndale
Time stands still at this unique little village with carefully preserved Victorian-era homes. Visit the local craft shops, art galleries, and chocolatiers, or stroll through the streets while admiring the architecture.
4. Mendocino
This quiet town is a magnet for artists, as its rolling headlands and restless ocean make for some spectacular views. Take a sunset stroll, and maybe even grab a brush to capture the view for posterity.
5. Mount Tamalpais
Mount Tamalpais in Marin County will show you some of the most breathtaking views in Northern California. Take one of several routes to the peak, and admire all that land and sea has to offer.
6. Skunk Train
Back in the day, the Skunk Train transported wood from the backcountry to the coast. Nowadays, you can ride this old-timey train through thick redwood forests and past the Noyo River to catch a glimpse of deer and river otters.
7. Sonoma Wine Country
California loves its grapes, and for good reason. With lush vineyards, crisp wines, and beautiful views all around, wine country in Sonoma is a treat for the eyes and the tongue.
Northern California has so much going for it that these only scratch the surface of what you'll love about the upper half of the state. What are some of your favorite destinations in NorCal?
