Everyone has heard of the famous Hearst Castle in San Simeon, but this famous family also had a secret estate in Siskiyou County. The Wyntoon Castle is a hidden gem that's absolutely magnificent. Unlike its famous big brother, Wyntoon is closed to the public and not open for tours. (Hearst Castle, however, is -- and is quite charming to visit!). If you want to see his hidden marvel, you'll have to grab a life vest and canoe your way up the McCloud River -- as long as you stay off the property, it's just fine to take a look! And if it's a royal adventure you're seeking, Wyntoon is a hidden castle in Northern California that will surprise and delight you.
As you can see in this helpful YouTube video, it's possible to paddle right along the breathtaking castle.

Grab your paddles and let's begin our journey!
You will begin your expedition on Lake McCloud and head upstream on the river to reach Wyntoon.
Wyntoon is located along the scenic Lake McCloud.
It takes just under two hours to paddle from the lake to the location on the lake where you will see Wyntoon. If you go further upstream, you will encounter rapids and be turned back.
Lake McCloud also boasts several incredible waterfalls and hiking trails that are not on private property.
So this really a scenic day trip -- with rushing waterfalls, fairy-tale forests, and a hidden castle!
As we paddle, let's chat about some historical facts about this hidden castle in Northern California.
The castle's name -- Wyntoon -- is derived from the Native American people who originally inhabited this area. They were the Winnemem Wintu tribe, a subgroup of the Wintun people.
In the 1880s, there was a hotel, restaurant, and hunting lodge in this site. Phoebe Hearst, an American businesswoman and philanthropist, acquired the property through a 99-year lease in 1900.
Like the other famous Hearst Castle, this one was designed by Julia Morgan (as well as other architects). The main part of the castle was built in 1902. Today, it is owned by the Hearst Corporation and remains private property that is not open to the public.
This place is extraordinary -- but it is private property. So enjoy these interior photos!
These early photos of the interior of the castle convey its very medieval original aesthetic, but who knows what it looks like inside nowadays!
But if you're prepared to have a little adventure, you'll be able to see this hidden castle for yourself!
So just be respectful about the property -- and let your sense of wonder lead the way.
