Is Southern California dangerous? Deadly and terrifying typically aren't the top two words that come to mind when you think of Southern California, right? However, there are a few precautions you should take to avoid any run-ins that could harm you or a loved one. 1. Mountain Lions

Mountain Lions may be pretty to look at from a distance, but come face to face with one and there's no question who is going to win. And it won't be you. They can be found in various parts of Southern California's wilderness so be aware of your surroundings. Most areas where Mountain Lions have been spotted are clearly marked, so just make sure to proceed with caution when hiking in those areas.

2. Great White Shark

Southern California is known for its heavenly beaches perfect for swimming. But SoCal is also known to have deadly sharks lurking in the waters who are ready to attack when a dinner opportunity arrives. Whether you're surfing or swimming here in SoCal, just make sure you're aware of the conditions before you get in the water.

3. Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

If you enjoy the outdoors in Southern California, you may also be aware that snakes can be a problem out on the trail. Although not all snakes are dangerous, you'll want to stay far away from the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake as their bites are painful and deadly.

4. Wildfires

Sadly, wildfires in Southern California have become more common in recent years. And more deadly. Especially when the fires spread through residential areas. Although the summer season is a risk for wildfires due to dry conditions, it's the windy season in the fall and spring that are a bigger risk due to the Santa Ana winds causing the fires to spread more quickly.

5. Mosquitos

Although most mosquito bites will just leave you with a very itchy welt, Southern California has noticed an increase in mosquitos carrying deadly viruses, including the West Nile Virus, which can be passed on to animals and people via a simple bug bite.

6. Reckless Drivers

It's a sad fact that driving in Southern California is a dangerous activity. Especially on the freeway when the cars around you are speeding, texting while driving, or just being reckless behind the wheel.

7. Black Widow Spiders

Although it may be rare to die from a spider bite from a black widow, it will definitely make you extremely ill and can be quite deadly if not treated right away. If you're not sure how to spot these spiders, be on the lookout for the signature red hourglass marking on the abdomen.

8. Black Bears

Although these bears look quite menacing due to their size -- between 300 and 600 pounds -- they only pose a risk when provoked. As long as you stay out of their way you can avoid an attack. However, if you do provoke a black bear, be prepared for one nasty encounter that may be deadly.
