Here in Northern California, we are well-known for our stunning redwood forests, which attract thousands of individuals each year. While you can always drive, hike, or ride a Railbike through these remarkable woods, during August and September 2022, you can travel on a restored 1909 steam engine. As part of Skunk Train's Days of Steam, this bucket-list-worthy journey takes you through the heart of the forest and makes you feel like you've stepped decades into the past. It is a unique way to explore the woods and is a one-of-a-kind adventure that you won't soon forget!
Since the 1880s, individuals of all ages were able to explore the ancient redwood groves but rather than in a car or on a Railbike, they were in a train. The trains were vital as they transported families and workers to and from logging camps.
While today Railbikes are a popular mode of transportation on the tracks, a historic steam engine will soon be back on the line.
Each weekend in August and September, you can take a ride on the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co. #2 to the Redwood Route. This historic steam engine was built in 1909 and was best known as "The Chiggen." This was because the train served as a billboard for a fried chicken restaurant for more than 30 years! The Chiggen has been fully restored and will be pulling authentic passenger cars during this unforgettable journey.
Your journey will take you seven miles round trip along the Pudding Creek Estuary. You will see some of Northern California’s natural beauty and feel like you’ve taken a step back in time.
The train leaves from the Fort Bragg Depot and takes approximately 75 minutes round trip.
It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance as this one-of-a-kind Northern California adventure will sell out quickly. Ticket prices vary depending on your age and even dogs can join in on the fun!
And, thanks to Skunk Train, you can not only have an experience on a restored steam engine, but you can pedal your way on a Railbike through the Redwood Forest near Fort Bragg and Willits.
With several experiences you can choose from that range in length and time, you’ll be able to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of this forest all while pedaling a Railbike. These bikes are electric and guide themselves without steering.
Bring your entire family and experience the redwood forest just like they did more than a century ago or while on a Railbike.
You can learn more about the Days of Steam adventure and the Railbike excursions on the Skunk Train website and Facebook page.
