One of the greatest simple pleasures in life is to sit on a nice patch of grass and, well, eat. And drink. And people watch. And just straight up relax. These are the ingredients for the perfect picnic in San Francisco. Here are the 10 best places in San Francisco to go for an unforgettable picnic.
1. Crissy Field
The West Bluff Picnic Area provides front-row views of the Golden Gate Bridge with picnic tables and plenty of green space to sprawl out on. Hit up the Warming Hut (you’ll know why it’s called that when you’re ducking for cover from wind and fog) for extra snacks or beverages.
2. Mission Dolores Park
A local favorite, this expansive green space is lined with palm trees and has a beautiful view of the downtown skyline. Grab your picnic supplies at the nearby shops on 18th Street, watch for the Truffle Man, and settle down for a sunny day of people-watching.
3. Baker or Marshall’s Beach
Really, there’s nothing like a picnic with sand between your toes, and a spectacular view of the iconic Golden Gate. For a bit more privacy, hike along the Batteries to Bluffs Trail and make your way down to the hidden Marshall’s Beach.
4. Alta Plaza Park
This Pac Heights park offers some posh 360 views of the city. Grab snacks on Fillmore Street and head up the grassy hill. Get in a tennis game, too, if you’re up for it.
5. Great Meadow Park at Fort Mason
Sandwiched between the touristy Fisherman’s Wharf and Crissy Field, this park fills up with crowds on the weekend, but is a pleasant Bayside picnic spot during the week. Climb up the trail via feet or bike to build up your appetite.
6. Corona Heights Park
Hike up to this hidden gem located between the Haight and Castro neighborhoods for a more intimate picnic topped off with breathtaking 360 views of San Francisco.
7. Alamo Square
This list wouldn’t be complete without a Full House reference. Grab your eats and drinks on Divisadero and frolic in front of the iconic Painted Ladies like Uncle Jessie and the gang. (NOTE: This park is currently closed and scheduled to reopen in late September 2016).
8. Yerba Buena Gardens
This is a popular weekday respite for the FiDi and SoMa crowd. We recommend heading up near the fountain and grabbing tea and a snack at Samovar. Post-picnic, hit up the newly renovated MOMA for a dose of culture.
9. Washington Square Park
Located in the heart of North Beach, this sunny park is surrounded by some classic Italian cafes and bakeries, which means you’ll have plenty of picnicking options to choose from. Sts. Peter and Paul Church stunningly looms over it all.
10. Golden Gate Park
The large and lush focal point of the western side of the city has a number of spots to settle down for a relaxing picnic. Marx Meadow and Mothers Meadow are popular locations (especially if you have little ones).
