Perhaps you've passed by this chapel many times, but have you ever had an opportunity to take a closer look at the stunning grounds of this historic landmark in Southern California? Located in Santa Barbara, you'll want to take some time to explore the beauty of the architecture and the landscape that surrounds this piece of history.
Founded in 1786, Old Mission Santa Barbara is a living reflection of Southern California's unique history.
Originally there were three different chapels that were built for this mission. However, damage from two different earthquakes destroyed the buildings and a new chapel was eventually built. This is the same chapel that still stands today.
The grounds that surround this chapel add to its beauty. With the Pacific Ocean nearby and the handsome Santa Ynez Mountains in the background, this is one location with breathtaking beauty in every direction.
The interior of the church is equally magnificent and serene. No changes have been made to the interior architecture since 1820.
Outside the chapel people gather at the site of this peaceful fountain. This is a popular outdoor gathering spot for visitors who are here for a tour.
As you wander the grounds make sure to stop and smell the roses at the stunning rose garden that surrounds the property with fragrant and colorful blooms.
The interior courtyard of the mission is filled with lush greenery in a tranquil setting.
There's also a Sacred Garden that you can tour that once served as a meditation garden. It still looks like it's a wonderful setting for meditation even today.
There are other unexpected finds on the grounds near the church.
For example, this clothes washing basin built by the Chumash tribe in the early 1800s still remains on the property and adds to the history of the Mission.
You'll also discover a unique work of art that graces the grounds of Old Mission Santa Barbara.
Hand carved by the Chumash tribe, this lion is said to be one of the oldest pieces of public artwork on display in Southern California.
To learn more about this stunning chapel and see the grounds in person, you can schedule a self-guided or docent-led tour. And make sure to stick around close to sunset so you can see this dazzling sky surrounding the chapel.
Old Mission Santa Barbara is located at 2201 Laguna Street in Santa Barbara. Tours of the chapel, surrounding grounds, and other mission buildings are offered daily.
