One of the best things about the holiday season is partaking in generations-old family traditions, and making new ones as well! In fact, it should be every family's goal to work in at least one new tradition every year. That shouldn't be so hard considering our state is home to an abundance of unique and wonderful holiday events. For instance, this holiday boat parade might be one of the quirkiest Christmas attractions you've ever seen, but it's a delightful experience you should definitely partake in. This parade has roots tracing back to the 1960s, making this a treasured family tradition for many and one of your new favorite events of the holiday season. Take a look:
A beloved Northern California tradition since 1966, the Lighted Boat Parade along the San Rafael Canal is a must-see event for families. This year, the parade will take place on December 15, and you don't want to miss it.
Thousands of spectators come out every year to admire the sight of dozens of beautifully decorated boats passing through the canal. The parade, led by Santa himself, is a dazzling display that is bound to fill you with holiday spirit.
It all started in 1966 when the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce sponsored a daytime parade of 58 boats. The parade has grown a lot since then, but the amazing sense of wonder it instills in spectators is still the same.
Definitely be sure to bundle up before heading out and finding that perfect spot to watch the parade. The boats will depart rain or shine at the east end of San Rafael Canal, right across from Pickleweed Park.
Anybody is welcome to take part in the fun. The popular parade attracts all kinds of individual boats from neighboring yacht clubs and communities throughout the Bay Area. All lighted boats are welcome, just as long as they aren't less than 25-feet in length.
Pack up a thermos of hot chocolate and bring the entire family out to see this unique display of holiday lights. You can't help but be filled with joy as the boats pass by you, some of which will be carrying singers and playing holiday music.
There are tons of places to stop and enjoy the parade, but some popular viewpoints can be found at Montecito Shopping Center, along Point San Pedro Road, and Pickleweed Park. This is a wonderful, free community celebration that is bound to leave an impression. Don't skip it!
