From the remnants of centuries-old houses to the pristine reproduction of a Coast Miwok Village, it seems like there is something incredible to explore around every turn. Located just north of Novato, Olompali State Historic Park is filled with local history, stunning natural beauty, and all kinds of opportunities for adventure. Simply put, it has a little bit of everything!
Located on the slope of Mount Burdell and overlooking the Petaluma River, the history of this land goes back a long, long time. Its prime location near water brought the habitation of Coast Miwoks as far back as 8,000 years ago.
In fact, the area that now comprises Olompali State Historic Park is an archaeological wonder. Approximately 50,000 artifacts were recovered here when excavations took place from the 1970s through the 1990s. A recreated Coast Miwok Village serves as a reminder of the ancient humans that lived here for thousands upon thousands of years.
The park is also home to the oldest surviving house north of the San Francisco Bay, originally built in 1776 of adobe bricks. The Burdell Mansion is another historic structure, constructed in the 1870s, that's worth seeking out along with its associated ranch buildings.
Come for the history, stay for the incredible natural beauty! There's no shortage of gorgeous scenery at Olompali State Historic Park and you can explore it yourself via the easygoing, 3-mile loop trail that takes you through the park and around the mountain.
Boasting a visitor center, picnic areas, and restrooms, the park makes for a fantastic destination for a leisurely family outing. It's open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Keep in mind that there is a park day use fee of $8 per vehicle.
