As animal encounters go, The Golden State offers many. But you might not expect to find one that offers a unique African experience just off the California Coast. Come along as we explore the one-of-a-kind B. Bryan Preserve.
The B. Bryan Preserve, founded in 2008, started as a hobby by two passionate animal lovers who had made a home for several hoofed African mammals.
Located a little less than an hour’s drive south of Mendocino, the enterprise today is now home to over 60 animals.
The zebras here—both Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras and Grévy’s Zebras—are among the most popular.
Most of the animals that live at the Preserve are not rescues, rather came from private animal organizations or zoos that no longer had the ability to keep them.
Although not currently on an endangered species list, the livelihood of the Sable Antelope is at risk.
By giving these animals a home here, it brings attention to the fact that they are "Conservation Dependent" in the wild, due to numerous factors, including climate change. Their efforts here are helped by the fact that the Preserve is a certified related facility of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Tours at the preserve are very popular so be sure to make a reservation as soon as possible.
Both educational and inspirational, the safari tours provide in-depth information about the plight of and conservation efforts designed to save these beautiful creatures both here and all over Africa.
Visitors also have the option to stay overnight and sleep among the animals.
Several different unique accommodations are offered here. Decorated in a zebra theme, the Zebra cottage offers a wide array of creature comforts including a king-sized bed, antique furniture, stained glass windows, and a kitchenette.
The BridgeCottage is also a beautiful spot to stay with family or friends.
Staying in this two-bedroom cottage is like being in a carefully designed architectural home with reclaimed hardwood floors, a parlor stove, and a loft. Outside there is a private hot tub and views of the small pond.
For a little taste of the African plains just off the Northern California Coast, spend the day at the B. Bryan Preserve.
Have you been to the B. Bryan Preserve? If so, what did you and your family enjoy the most? We’d love to see your photos and hear about your experience there.
