Located in Old Town San Diego, the Whaley House has a truly fascinating history. In 1856, Thomas Whaley famously said that the new house he was building would be "the handsomest, most comfortable, and convenient place in town or within 150 miles of here." Little did he know that his house would later become known as the most haunted one in America!
The Whaley House had previously been the site of the execution of a notorious horse thief, but Thomas Whaley wasn’t fazed by its history. However, his family was struck with tragedy nearly as soon as they moved in. Thomas and his wife had a son who sadly passed away at just 18 months due to Scarlet Fever.
Visitors say they can still hear the baby’s little footsteps, as well as his crying and giggling throughout the house. The Greek revival house was eventually abandoned and has since been made into a museum and mesmerizing attraction.
You’ll get an eerie feeling once you’re inside the house- guests report feeling the presences of Thomas and Anna in the stairwell, as well as other ghosts in the rest of the house. Haunted happenings include seeing mysterious mists in the house, witnessing lights turning on and off by themselves, and swinging crystals in the parlor room.
The Whaley House is a historic landmark, and you can tell how well it has been preserved throughout the years. It’s like stepping back in time to walk into every room in the house- you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to the early days of the Whaley family’s time in the home.
There is just something about the Whaley House that makes you feel like you’re never quite alone.
