Tucked right along Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Canyon Country Store has been a fixture in the community for decades. If these walls could talk, we bet they'd have a whole lot to say!
The Laurel Canyon Country Store is far from your average grocery store. In the song "Love Street" by the Doors, the humble market is described as the "store where the creatures meet." That's right, this little store has a big place in rock 'n roll history.
It's well-known that musicians flocked to Laurel Canyon during the counterculture movement of the 1960s. As a result, the tiny market became a popular gathering spot for musicians like Frank Zappa and Joni Mitchell. And yes, Jim Morrison was a frequent visitor, as well.
The Canyon Country Store was around way before it cemented its place in musical history, though. It all started in 1900 when an inn called the Bungalow Lodge opened, catering mainly to hunters. The inn burned down in 1929 but was rebuilt with brick and stone and eventually re-opened as a local market.
Those days are long in the past but Canyon Country Store remains a retro gem in a beautiful canyon setting. Although filled with your typical selection of grocery items, the store has a unique character to it that you won't find anywhere else.
Additionally, the store contains a stellar deli counter where you can grab a sandwich, pastry, or coffee to enjoy on the patio. There's no better spot to soak up the magical, musical aura of Laurel Canyon!
The next time you find yourself driving the winding roads through Laurel Canyon, plan to stop at the legendary store that's served the community for generations. Canyon Country Store is a gem that's worth keeping alive!
