Knights Ferry Recreation Area is located along the gorgeous Stanislaus River in the small community of Knights Ferry. The area is famously beautiful and most well-known for being one of the filming locations for shows like Little House On The Praire.
The recreation area contains a large park with numerous hiking trails and places to hang out while taking in the scenery. It's a popular destination for families who spend their afternoons picnicking by the river and taking pictures of the breathtaking surroundings.
However, the park's highlight is the massive covered bridge known aptly as the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge. The bridge spans 330 feet over the Stanislaus River, making it the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi.
This historic bridge is an important part of the town's history. It was built in the 1860s and was heavily trafficked during the California Gold Rush. It was restored in 1989, making it suitable for pedestrians.
The site of the bridge against the stunning backdrop of foothills is like something out of a dream. It's pretty amazing to think of all the people who have crossed the bridge over the 150 years it's existed.
Take advantage of the many hiking trails around the park. One of the most popular trails is a simple 1.5 mile loop trail that takes you through historic sites such as the old flour mill and the old post office.
Afterwards, you can explore Knights Ferry's quaint downtown area which contains a plethora of historic structures. Here you'll find California's oldest operating general store. It's pretty amazing to look at just how well-preserved this historic town is.
