The site of the church was established in 1880 by Father Michael Smythe. It wasn't until 1909 that the buildings as we know them today really began to take shape.
Famous in its own right, it’s the only church that's entered through the bell tower.
The magnificent dome's look was inspired by holy structures like the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It is remarkable to have such architecture as if found at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Eureka Springs.
Each year, thousands of people from all over the world trek to the church, which was once featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
The church isn’t just unique, though. It’s also beautiful and brimming with history.
Listed on the National Historic Register, the church celebrated its dedication ceremonies on May 11, 1909.
Sparing no expense, it boasted striking features, such as marble altars and mosaic flooring from Italy as well as beautiful statuary.
The famed bell tower was added in 1910. Sadly, the stone church soon fell into disrepair due to lack of proper heating.
By the 1950s, efforts to restore the church were underway.
Better than ever before, it now boasts ornate features, such as a large chandelier with 7,500 crystals.
You will be hard pressed to find another church quite like the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
