If you’re an Arkansas native, chances are, you’ll know that Lake Ouachita is one of the cleanest lakes in the nation. Plus, the gorgeous 40,000-acre lake is a paradise for outdoor recreation. While it’s amazing to explore the pristine lake from its shorelines, it’s equally impressive to witness this oasis from over 1,000 feet above sea level. If this sounds intriguing to you, then let’s head to Hickory Nut Mountain Vista in the small town of Mount Ida. This unique man-made wonder in Arkansas features the most stunning panoramic views of the lake. The incredible stone structure is cradled atop Hickory Nut Mountain, and in my opinion, it’s worth the bumpy drive to the top.
As you drive on the bumpy 4-mile road to the top of Hickory Nut Mountain inside the Ouachita Forest, you can only anticipate what's in store when you get to the peak. Located about 15 miles outside of the charming town of Mount Ida, this mountain is the site of a unique, man-made stone overlook in Arkansas.
Nestled atop the mountain is the Hickory Nut Mountain Vista overlook. This massive stone structure was constructed over 60 years ago to provide sprawling views of the pristine Lake Ouachita as well as the rolling hills and forest below. As you can see from this vantage point, the well-constructed stone wall stands out atop the mountain.
Also, the wall is the highest point where you can view the lake, so the panoramic vistas are simply breathtaking. To build the stone structure, the US Forest Service used dynamite to carve out the solid rock ridge at the top of the mountain.
Then, beautiful sandstone rocks were used to carefully construct the massive wall structure. Additionally, a large parking lot was built as well as a recreational area. Over the years, the site has seen some vandalism which has caused much decline.
However, the massive rock-lined wonder still stands high above the clouds and provides surreal views of the lake as well as the hundreds of tiny islands below. Since the opening of the popular Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT), this incredible stone vista has become a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike.
Folks have used the spot for weddings, proposals, special events, wildlife viewing, and more. Plus, Lake Ouachita, another man-made wonder, provides a picturesque backdrop for photographers.
In addition to witnessing the lake, you can also marvel at the pretty sunsets from the sandstone overlook. Or stay until dark and witness the twinkling stars above. Whether it's a man-made or a natural wonder, I find it truly amazing how man and nature can create such astonishing beauty.
