From Night of the Living Dead to Pet Sematary, cemeteries are popular settings for horror stories. Probably because they are literally where we keep our dead. You’re not going to find zombies in these ten Arkansas cemeteries, and you may not find ghosts either, but some people have some truly eerie stories about these places. From wailing baby ghosts to creepy Confederate soldiers to sounds and lights that remain unexplained, the reports of hauntings at these places may freak you out. If you’re a very brave believer in the supernatural, you’ll probably have a super time visiting these ten spookyards.

1. Fredonia Cemetery (Mountain View)

If a feeling of dread is following you around Fredonia Cemetery in Mountain View, you are not alone. It is said that the flags on the graves there wave without a single breeze in the air, and sometimes, if you get still and listen, you’ll hear voices and strange noises coming from seemingly nowhere. You’ll find Fredonia Cemetery in the town of Mountain View.

2. Mount Holly Cemetery (Little Rock)

If you want to see the ghosts of Native Americans and Confederate soldiers roaming around like they haven’t been dead for over a hundred years, go to Mount Holly Cemetery at night. You may also notice that some of the tombstones tend to rearrange themselves without explanation. For extra fun, listen for the sound of a ghostly flute in the early morning hours. Mount Holly Cemetery is located at 1200 South Broadway in Little Rock.

3. Keller’s Chapel and Cemetery (Jonesboro)

Reports claim strange apparitions haunt the grounds of Keller’s Chapel and the cemetery that surrounds it. At night you may find yourself being followed not by a fellow ghost hunter, but by ghostly lights and sounds that can’t be explained. You may also hear the wails of a baby, when there is no baby there. Keller’s Chapel and Cemetery are located in the city of Jonesboro.

4. Moore Hill Cemetery (Dardanelle)

Make sure you’re visiting Moore Hill Cemetery legally, as trespassers are not welcome there. If you do manage to visit with permission, hanging around the "Hovis" gravestones will eventually reveal the ghost of a man who killed his own wife. You’ll find this cemetery in the town of Dardanelle.

5. Avon Cemetery (De Queen)

Legend says that a woman who was drawing water from the well there sat her baby on the edge one day. The baby fell in and drowned. If you drop a rock in the well today, you will hear the baby’s cries. You may even catch a glimpse of its mother running through the cemetery. Avon Cemetery is located in De Queen.

6. Conway Cemetery (Bradley)

Conway Cemetery Historic State Park holds a half-acre family cemetery where James S. Conway, the first governor of Arkansas, is buried. On midnight during a full moon, you’ll hear voices coming from a nearby tree where many executions by hanging were carried out. Conway Cemetery is located on County Rd 9 in Bradley.

7. Shady Grove Cemetery (Bald Knob)

Some people report that Shady Grove Cemetery is so haunted crickets and grasshoppers won’t come near it. It is said that if you flash your headlights three times, ghost children will put their handprints on your car. You’ll find Shady Grove Cemetery in the town of Bald Knob.

8. Opossum Walk Cemetery (Coal Hill)

It is reported that the gates of Opossum Walk Cemetery are hot to the touch—even during the cold of winter. Visitors report the sounds of footsteps following them through the graveyard and apparitions appearing in their peripheral vision. Opossum Walk Cemetery can be found in the community of Coal Hill.

9. Evergreen Cemetery (Judsonia)

Fans of the show Doctor Who and its terrifying Weeping Angels should definitely avoid the Evergreen Cemetery. There is a large statue of an angel there, and visitors who stand underneath her at night may find she begins staring at them while her eyes turn red. Evergreen Cemetery is located in the town of Judsonia.

10. Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery (Batesville)

The form of a young boy has appeared in photos taken of this cemetery. The form of an old woman in a rocking chair appears in the church window, and the ghost of a woman killed in the early 1900s sometimes visits the cemetery. You’ll find this cemetery in Batesville.
