If you find yourself driving along Scottsdale Road by Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., you've probably noticed a tall, colorful obelisk reaching for the sky. Set outside the Promenade, a major shopping center, The Frank Lloyd Wright Spire in Scottsdale is a curious sight and a famous landmark in Arizona. But how did it come to be? Here's the story behind it.
When driving down Scottsdale Road or Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. in Scottsdale, it's hard not to notice the blue and turquoise sculpture reaching for the bright blue Arizona sky.
Sitting outside the Promenade shopping complex on one of the busiest corners in the area, the Frank Lloyd Wright Spire is certainly eye-catching. It's become quite a Scottsdale landmark.
So, what's the story behind this blue-and-turquoise-colored spire? In 1957, Frank Lloyd Wright created a design that included spires and a landmark for the Arizona State Capitol. However, his design was never used there.
It wasn't until 2004 that the Promenade in Scottsdale needed a focal point. Architect Arnold Roy, who had worked under Frank Lloyd Wright, suggested Wright's 1957 State Capitol design to be used at the Promenade.
It's become a prominent piece of architectural art in Scottsdale since it was constructed.
Towering at 125 feet over the shopping complex, the Frank Lloyd Wright Spire was constructed with over 1,700 pieces of steel and happens to weigh 75,000 pounds. The turquoise was used as the color for the glass as Arizona is known for its turquoise.
At night, the Spire is aglow with lights. This is a sight I love seeing when driving down Scottsdale Rd. at night.
