Alaska is a large and mostly unoccupied state. There are many ghost towns and abandoned villages all over the place. And this abandoned Alaska military building in Whittier could be arguably one of the most haunted places in Alaska. After decades of neglect, this old building has completely fallen into ruin.
There’s a tiny town called Whittier, located on the Prince William Sound in Alaska.
This little spot is the site of one of the most haunted buildings in Alaska. The Buckner Building was commissioned during World War II and completed in 1953.
General Simon Buckner commissioned this bunker to be built to protect American troops during the war.
For many years, the building was the largest building in Alaska. It earned the nickname "the city under one roof," and was built to house up to 1,000 soldiers.
The Buckner Building was built to be six stories tall, and about 500 feet long by 50–150 feet wide. The entire structure is approximately 275,000 square feet, and once housed a giant mess hall, large sleeping quarters, a movie theatre, bowling alley, a small jail, and even tunnels connecting the town of Whittier, Alaska.
The building was even hit by the 1964 earthquake and suffered almost no damage.
But the military pulled out in 1966 and abandoned the building, where it went through a number of hands before passing to the City of Whittier. The building fell into disrepair.
Everything inside the building and out has been broken and vandalized.

While people are no longer allowed inside, for many years it was destroyed by disrespectful visitors, and undergoing a constant freeze-thaw cycle, as the windows and doors were all removed and damaged.
Many report strange sounds emanating from deep within the building.
Nature has slowly begun to reclaim the building after it was abandoned, and many animals live inside. There have also been strange sightings in and around the building.
If you have the chance to visit the Buckner Building, be sure to get some great photos.
You can no longer enter the building, but even the exterior is guaranteed to give you chills. This is one haunted building you wouldn’t want to spend the night in!
