Without a doubt, bridges are some of the world's most incredible architectural structures. While some of them are newer, others are quite historic. One of Alabama's most historic bridges, which also has an impressive height, is the Horton Mill Covered Bridge. Known as the tallest covered bridge in Alabama, take a deep dive into the history of this impressive architectural structure.
The Horton Mill Covered Bridge was constructed in 1934 and is located near the small Alabama town of Oneonta, which is situated in Blount County.
Blount County is home to three of Alabama's historic covered bridges, which makes it best known as the "Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama."
A crew of 15 men, which was led by Talmadge Horton, built the Horton Mill Covered Bridge. It took them 1.5 years to complete, and it was later added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 1970.
In 1974, this historic bridge, which is approximately 220 feet long, was fully restored. Today, it receives visitors from all across the Southeast and beyond.
One of the bridge's most defining features is its height. At 70 feet, the Horton Mill Covered Bridge, which spans the Calvert Prong of the Little Warrior River, is the tallest covered bridge over any waterway in the United States.
Due to vandalism, the Horton Mill Covered Bridge was closed to traffic in 2007. In 2013, it reopened. The next time you're in the Oneonta area, consider taking a drive across this historic bridge. Just keep in mind there's only one lane and the speed limit is 5MPH.
