There are many historic cities located throughout Alabama, and some are among the oldest in the state. Interestingly, many of these cities are still thriving today. The oldest city in Alabama that's loaded with history and worthy of a visit is Childersburg.
The city of Childersburg is located in Talladega County, Alabama and has a population of around 5,000 residents.
Childersburg was incorporated in 1889. However, the city claims to have a history that dates back further than 1540. This not only makes Childersburg the oldest city in Alabama, but also the oldest city in America.
The Coosa River, which is 280 miles long and one of Alabama's most developed rivers, flows through Childersburg and is the third largest stream east of the Mississippi River. This picturesque river is the perfect fishing spot for all ages.
Childersburg is home to three main attractions: Kymulga Grist Mill Park, DeSoto Caverns and the Butler-Harris-Rainwater Museum.
1. Kymulga Grist Mill Park
Kymulga Grist Mill Park is home to Kymulga Grist Mill and the Kymulga Bridge. The Kymulga Grist Mill was built is 1864 and still operates today. The Kymulga Bridge was built in 1861 and is only one of two 19th century covered bridges in Alabama that still stands in its original location. Address: 7346 Grist Mill Rd, Childersburg, AL 35044
2. DeSoto Caverns
DeSoto Caverns, best known as "Alabama's Big Cave," is a series of prehistoric caves that's located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. DeSoto Caverns is also the first recorded cave in the U.S. Today, this historic cave is a family fun park that's enjoyed by all ages. Address: 5181 Desoto Caverns Pkwy, Childersburg, AL 35044
3. Butler-Harris-Rainwater Museum
The Butler-Harris-Rainwater Museum is a Victorian house museum with several artifacts on display that explain Childersburg's history. This museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Address: 1001 1st St SW, Childersburg, Al 35044
Because Childersburg is only 30 minutes from Birmingham, residents have access to even more great attractions such as the Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
