Covered bridges are special structures that are quite popular in the South, especially here in Alabama. What makes them so special is their rarity. There are approximately 1,000 covered bridges still standing in the United States today. Only 11 of those covered bridges are in Alabama, one of which is the Coldwater Covered Bridge. The Coldwater Covered Bridge is located in Oxford, Alabama at Oxford Lake Park. It's one of the state's most charming covered bridges and a popular tourist stop.
Also known as Hughes Mill Covered Bridge, it was built circa 1850, which makes it Alabama's oldest covered bridge in existence today. It's a definite must-visit!
Spanning the outflow of Calhoun County's Oxford Lake, the Coldwater Covered Bridge measures 63 feet long. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1973.
From the outside, the bridge's structure is quite impressive. Once inside, you'll agree the lattice detail is pretty amazing, too. No attention to detail was left out during the construction of the Coldwater Covered Bridge.
