We here in the Yellowhammer State are quite proud of our haunted places. One place in particular is The Battle House Hotel, an eerie haunted hotel in Alabama. It has a deep haunting history that won't soon be forgotten. Come along as we show you how it earned that reputation, yet is still one of the most beautiful and popular hotels in the state.
The Battle House Hotel, located in downtown Mobile, Alabama, was originally built in 1851.
After a devastating fire in which it burned down in 1905, it was rebuilt in 1908.
Many ghostly occurrences have supposedly happened within the walls of The Battle House Hotel.
For example, while the hotel was undergoing renovations, several construction workers' tools went missing. As if that wasn't enough paranormal activity, all of the work they did disappeared as if nothing was ever done.
One of the hotel's most famous hauntings involves a man named Mr. Henry Butler, a former Mardi Gras King.
As the story goes, Mr. Butler had been caught fooling around with Mrs. Raymond Dyson, his Mardi Gras Queen. It didn't take long for Mrs. Dyson's husband and his brother to find out about the affair. They talked Mr. Butler into following them to room 552, where they eventually beat him to death. Mr. Butler's ghost has haunted the hotel's fifth floor ever since.
Another famous haunting at The Battle House Hotel involves a newlywed.
In 1910, shortly after a young woman's wedding in Alabama, her husband was called away on business. She became very lonely and hung herself from the chandelier. While her wedding portrait hung in the Crystal Ballroom, several guests noticed a gray figure in it. This figure was her husband. He had returned to find her.
Over the years, many guests and staff members have reported seeing ghostly figures and hearing strange voices.
In the hotel guest rooms and other places, faucets and lights have also been known to turn on and off by themselves.
Everywhere you look you'll see scores of lovely details...
...but it also makes you wonder if there are some ghost stories hidden behind those beautiful spots.
Despite fires and renovations, several ghosts still haunt The Battle House Hotel.
If you're looking for a haunting experience during your hotel stay, be sure to reserve a room on the fourth floor. Many guests who've stayed on this floor have reported feeling "dips" on their bed.
