Odessa may be small in size, but it’s packed with history. Not only is it quite possibly the most charming little Christmas town in Delaware, but it also may just be the best place in the state to experience an old-fashioned Christmas. We’re talking candlelight walking tours, colonial dances, exhibits based on classic literature, and more.
With a population of 364, Odessa is a decidedly tiny town. It’s located in New Castle County and has over 80 buildings recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. One of these buildings is the Corbit-Sharp House, a historic house museum built in 1774 and managed by the Historic Odessa Foundation and the site of annual holiday displays.
Each year, the Historic Odessa Foundation celebrates the holiday season with exhibits, walking tours, and events. Take a candlelight walking tour through this little 18th-century hamlet and admire the Christmas lights strewn over historic architecture as you go. If you’d prefer to stay in the warmth, you can also take a drive through the historic area of Odessa.
Nothing's quite as magical as walking along past historic homes decked out in lights, imagining you've been transported back in time.
Be sure to stop by Cantwell's Tavern for a hot coffee or tea. This historic tavern was built in 1822 and operated as a hotel and tavern for a century.
When you've finished touring the lights, come into the warmth of the Corbit-Sharp House and enjoy the seasonal exhibits!
Each year, the Historic Odessa Foundation transforms the historic house into an exhibition of classic children's literature. Past years have included A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist.
There's nothing quite like stepping through these doors and back in time. It's a unique way to experience some truly memorable holiday cheer.
Visit the Historic Odessa Foundation website to find upcoming events and buy tickets.
Have you ever visited Odessa during the holiday season? We'd love for you to share your experience.
