Delaware is a beautiful state, especially if you know where to look! Sure, plenty of our state is crowded with poultry farms and industrial buildings, or big strip malls packed with chain restaurants and stores. But there is natural beauty all throughout the First State, and if you're looking for a natural oasis where you'll find some peace and quiet, Milton may be your paradise.
Driving through Sussex County is a unique experience because you'll see thousands of acres of farms and fields slowly turn to marsh and wetlands as you get to the coast.
At one of these crossroads is the small town of Milton, home to 2,500 Delawareans and absolute paradise for nature lovers.
The town itself is on the Broadkill River, and the Governor's Walk is a charming riverwalk that shows off the town's scenery.
Delaware's not much of a waterfall state, but if you use a little imagination, the spillways along the Governor's Walk are pretty to watch!
Just outside of town, you'll find two of the most beautiful natural oases in the state — Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and Redden State Forest.
Prime Hook is one of the top destinations in the state for birdwatchers and kayakers, as their sanctuary is home to dozens of species, and the paddle trail is the best around.
Redden State Forest is full of beautiful hiking trails, where you'll be able to enjoy some true peace and quiet.
Oh... and if you're outdoorsy in that you like drinking on the patio, well, Milton's got you pretty well covered there, too!
Visit Dogfish Head for one of the best brewery tours in the country any time of year.
You can learn more about Prime Hook by reading about The Hidden Park That Will Make You Feel Like You've Discovered Delaware's Best Kept Secret, and visiting Redden State Forest is so worth the drive!
