Follow Route 13 and Route 113 from Wilmington to Selbyville on the historic DuPont Highway.
Thomas Coleman DuPont proposed a highway from Selbyville north to Wilmington in 1908, to help connect the southern part of the state with the prosperous north. Construction of the highway began in 1911, and it was completed in 1923. As sections of the highway were built, they were transferred to the state. The completion of the highway brought business and accessibility to Slower Lower, and it became one of the most successful highway projects of its time. Start your day off in Wilmington, with breakfast at Angelo's Luncheonette.
This delicious old fashioned diner is known for their pancakes, which are some of the best in the entire state. After breakfast, head south on Route 13 - the DuPont Highway - and enjoy the sights along the way.
You'll cross the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal on the Route 13 Bridge.
It's not as shiny and new as the adjacent Route 1 bridge, but this historic structure was opened in 1942 and became the first high-level crossing to span the canal, replacing an older, damaged bridge.
Route 13 takes you right through historic Odessa, where you'll find homes dating back to the 1800s.
This famous sandwich shop serves up a sausage sandwich to die for! Seriously, if you don't stop here for a bite to eat, you're missing out on one of Delaware's best culinary traditions.
As you head south, you'll creep into Dover, our capital city. When you pass Dover Speedway, stop for a selfie with Miles the Monster!
Miles is the largest monster in the world! He's nearly 50 feet tall and weighs as much as THREE Tyrannosaurus Rexes - or 4,000 cats.When the DuPont Highway was originally built, Route 13 ended in Dover, and Route 113 continued onto Selbyville. If you're interested in taking the original route, take Route 1 from Dover to Route 113, and head south. We'll be taking a slight detour.
Continue on past Dover and into rural Felton, where you'll find Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery.
The DuPont Highway will take you to the door of one of Delaware's most charming wineries. Pizzadili Vineyard offers tours and tastings all year long, and there's nothing more relaxing than spending an afternoon sipping Delaware wines.
From Pizzadilli, head south and then east, getting back onto Route 113 via rural back roads until you arrive in Milford.
You'll pass Redden State Forest, which is one of Delaware's least trekked swatches of land. It's the perfect place to stretch your legs and spot some wildlife.
Selbyville is your final destination - this is where the original DuPont Highway ended!
Enjoy harborside views and some of the freshest seafood around as your reward for traveling one of Delaware's oldest roads - the historic DuPont Highway.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. It may not have the bustling boardwalk of Rehoboth Beach, but for those looking for a slightly quieter but still fun-filled getaway, Delaware's Dewey Beach has a ton to offer. With lively nightlife options, yet a more casual feel than some of the busier shoretowns, Dewey Beach is the perfect Delaware small town for a unique weekend getaway. With a population of a little over 300, and only about a mile long and two blocks wide, Dewey Beach is tiny. But this little coastal town is anything but sleepy.
Dewey Beach is known for its nightlife, with multiple popular bars and restaurants lining its main street. It's also home to Bottle & Cork, a popular concert venue and bar. There's no lack of entertainment to be found here.
And there's plenty of good food. Woody's is one of the best places around to grab burgers, crab cakes, and more, with lots of delicious seafood on the menu - along with craft cocktails to complete the meal.
There are few better places to catch a sunset than The Lighthouse, a restaurant and bar right on the beach facing the bay, and often featuring live entertainment. Relax with a cocktail in hand, listen to some live music, and enjoy the bayside views.
Of course, the sunrises on Dewey Beach can't be beat either. Get up early enough and you're likely to find a quiet beach with a stunning sunrise painted across the sky.
If you've gotten yourself out of bed early enough to catch a sunrise (or never went to bed at all), you deserve a great cup of coffee. And that's just what you'll find at The Dewey Post, along with delicious breakfast and lunch options.
Looking for a Fido-friendly weekend getaway in Delaware? Dewey Beach welcomes your canine friends. Dogs are permitted on the beach during certain hours in the summertime (typically before 9:30 am and after 5:30 pm), and all day from mid-September through mid-May. There are even a few dog-friendly restaurants in Dewey Beach, including the aforementioned Woody's and the Dewey Post.
If you want to enjoy even more of Delaware's natural coastal beauty, Dewey Beach is only around 20-25 minutes away from Cape Henlopen State Park. Here you can hike or bike through forests, dunes, and wetlands on the very accessible Gordons Pond Trail. You can even borrow a bike for free.
