Most people think of seafood when they think of Delaware's signature cuisine, but if you grew up in New Castle County, chances are you've got a real taste for hot dogs.
Two of the country's best hot dog stands - The Dog House and Deerhead - are located just a few miles away from each other, and both have become culinary icons.
Deerhead began serving hot dogs in the 1930s, and by the middle of the decade, they were famous for quality food and friendly service.
The original restauranteurs developed a secret sauce topping, influenced by chili dogs that had recently been introduced to the Philadelphia area.
Word quickly spread of these unique hot dogs topped with secret sauce, onions, and sometimes cheese, and soon there was a line out the door nearly every day!
For more than 80 years, Delawareans have flocked to this humble hot dog stand to enjoy a split dog with Deerhead sauce. It's become a family tradition, and everyone who grew up in Wilmington certainly has memories of dining here.
Deerhead has even opened a food truck, so you might be able to pick up your favorite Delaware dog when you least expect it.
