Settled by the English in 1633, Windsor holds Connecticut's title for the oldest town. Of course, back then its name was Dorchester. The best thing about Windsor is that its preserved a lot of its history, from the architecture of the buildings to the Oliver Ellsworth Homestead.
The town is rich with history, so it's awesome that some of it is still alive. The original settlers were invited by the Podunk Indians to settle on a patch of land that would serve as a barrier between the Podunk and Pequot, who were at war. And it wouldn't be the last time the tiny settlement was stuck in the middle!
This charming locale was almost a part of another state! But their political ideology combined with the loyal leadership of William Holmes, made them Nutmeggers for life.
For years they were stuck between the battling views of Hartford and Springfield, a feud that was sparked by the Grain Famine of 1648. Aren't we lucky they chose us?
Communication may have been a hardship then, but the technology that changed all that is conveniently stored at the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut.
So why not stop by? Checking out the vintage communications and meandering around town is an excellent way to spend some time before paying a visit to the scenic Northwest Park.
Nestled beside the Farmington River, the 473-acre park has endless activities.
Walking trails, a nature center, and plenty of open space means it can be used for any activity you want. Plan a family picnic or stop by the Luddy/Taylor Connecticut Valley Tobacco Museum at the park's entrance for even more state history.
Whether you come for the time traveling history experience, or just to escape the city, Windsor is a wonderful place to spend the day.
Looking around and realizing that this is where it all began is a pretty unique way to spend an afternoon. So definitely add this place to your bucket list!
