You don't have to head out into the middle of the forest for an incredible hiking trail. In Connecticut, there's a whimsical staircase hike and it's just minutes away from one of our larger cities. Journey up a winding set of stone stairs for the best views of New Haven and beyond. Are you up for the adventure?
East Rock rises 350 feet over the Mill River and overlooks the city of New Haven. It is located within the boundaries of the 427-acre park located both in the Elm City and Hamden.
Many take the paved winding road to the top of East Rock, but if you want bragging rights then you'll want to take the staircase trail.
The Giant Steps are carved into the side of the ridge. Climb more than 200 of them to reach the top.
Hang on to the handrail and watch your footing. The 285-foot ascension of this winding path will get your heart pumping.
Reach the summit and celebrate. You've conquered the Giant Steps and now it's time for the payoff.
Drink in the panoramic views that seemingly stretch for miles and miles.
There's nothing quite like a bird's eye view of the landscape below.
Also waiting at the top of East Rock is the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument honoring New Haven veterans who died in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican American War, and Civil War.
East Rock Park is open to hikers and walkers all year long. The road for cars is open from April 1 through November 1, 8 a.m. to sunset. From November 2 through March 3, the road is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting.
