First-time visitors are often shocked at how much beauty is in Connecticut. Sure, the state is densely-populated and has several large cities, but it's also home to acres of forests, preserves, and state parks. From the massive Pachaug State Forest to the barely-there Minnie Island State Park, we have tons of natural surroundings to explore. There's plenty more to see here, from our lakes and rivers to, of course, our beautiful trails. Nutmeg State hiking is an absolute delight, with so many opportunities to get out and explore. One of the state's most beloved trails is the Air Line State Park Trail. This rail trail runs for almost 55 miles and spans through several great towns. One of the best towns along the Air Line State Park Trail is at the trail's terminus: East Hampton. This place is heaven for nature lovers! Here are a few of the great attractions here when you explore Air Line State Park Trail in East Hampton, CT:
The Air Line State Park Trail actually ends (or begins, depending on which way you start) in East Hampton. It's a rail trail that was once used to carry trains through New England and is now used recreationally by hikers and bikers.
The trail is a linear state park and is divided into three sections. East Hampton is part of the South portion of the trail.
While most of us aren't capable of exploring the entire length of the trail in one go-around, you can always just go for a short jaunt. Rail trails tend to be flat, easy treks, and this is no exception.
While you're in the area, another great state park that lies partially within East Hampton's borders is Hurd State Park. This 991-acre preserve is right along the Connecticut River.
Hiking, mountain biking, and primitive camping are all all popular activities here.
Yet another landmark within this town of about 3,500 is the Comstock Covered Bridge. Built in 1840, it's one of just three historical covered bridges in Connecticut.
The area around the bridge has a small park with a great trail if you'd like to explore the surroundings.
The outdoor fun truly never ends in East Hampton, CT. Meshomasic State Forest is also here for exploration.
This 9,000-acre forest offers up miles of trails and is a popular spot for hunting.
