Forget the naysayers who dismiss Connecticut's hiking options: There are a variety of amazing trails in the site, for novices and experts alike.
One of our favorite trails in the state is a little bit harder, but this loop forest trail near Sherman, Connecticut takes you through a forest to an unforgettable outlook.
There is a lot to love about the Herrick Trail Preserve via Appalachian Trail Loop.
At nearly nine miles long, the trail is rated difficult on AllTrails, so it's best for hikers looking for a challenge!
It can get quite steep in some parts — the elevation gain is a whopping 1,574 feet.
Luckily, you get to enjoy the peace and beauty of the forest along the way.
One of the best parts is when you're walking along the river. It's just SO pretty here.
You'll see several other streams along the way, too.
Eventually, you reach the best part: the overlook.
It is simply a stunning view. There is that river you saw earlier! Now you can enjoy it from an entirely different angle.
The trail is lightly trafficked, which means you'll probably get to enjoy this overlook all by yourself.
Take your time catching your breath and snapping photos!
Plus, depending on the season, your view of the Housatonic River Valley up here will look different.
It may be covered in colors during the fall, verdant greenery in the summer, or an icy wonderland in the winter.
Like we said, this trail is a challenge, but it's a quiet one that will really immerse you in Connecticut nature.
Keep an eye out for the wildflowers and the variety of birds you can see on this trail!
While the overlook is what makes this hike, you can't forget all the other amazing features along the way.
