It looks simple on the outside, but this hidden gem restaurant in Connecticut has a whole lot to offer. A veteran owned business, Pig Rig BBQ is more than just a restaurant. They also offer catering and have a food truck. The hickory smoked barbecue is packed with sweet smoky flavor. The Carolina pulled pork sandwich has quite a great reputation in this joint. Every meal is served with signature sides like smoked mac and cheese, cowboy beans, potato salad, and cornbread.
This restaurant is one of Connecticut's true hidden gems. With a view like this, you are sure to enjoy the food at RiverView BBQ. You don't even need a car to get here. Just paddle on up in your kayak for a great meal. Not only do they have fabulous barbecue, the baked beans are to die for.
What started out as a roadside shack with only outdoor seating has turned into a quaint little restaurant adorned with pig decor. However, the pig that is most important is the one that is cooked, slowly so that its meat is falling off of the bones. The pulled pork platter is full of tender juicy meat with a sweet but tangy flavor. Also worth noting are the spicy deviled eggs and seafood gumbo loaded with shrimp and crab.
So it's an odd combination, or is it? Wood's Pitt BBQ and Mexican Cafe serves barbecue ribs and other standard fare alongside a Mexican menu. The pork is sweet and tender and a perfect hit the spot meal after a long day on nearby Bantam Lake. If you visit make sure and try the jalapeno cornbread. It is one of the specialties that everyone for miles around talks about.

Connecticut is a pretty small state, so it's easy to travel just about anywhere in it on a day trip. Still, some areas of the Nutmeg State aren't visited, especially by tourists, as frequently. The northeast corner of the state, near the Rhode Island border, is one of those areas. That means some of its best surprises are true hidden gems, and I found one of them in the small town of Danielson. This beautiful town of around 4,200 people is home to natural beauty and historic buildings as well as a great rural restaurant in Connecticut. George's Galley is a true hometown restaurant, serving diner-style classics, with a little extra flair, in a laid-back environment. It's usually packed with locals every morning, but there's always room for newcomers. Pay a visit and see why it lives up to its reputation.
Despite its nautical theme, George's Galley is well inland. While it's not a seafood restaurant, this humble local eatery specializes in the kind of hearty food sailors would kick off their day with. It's been serving big plates to the locals since 1978, survived a car accident a few years ago that took out a wall, resulting in a temporary closure, and it isn't slowing down any time soon.

Breakfast is the biggest meal of the day here, and omelets are the signature at George's Galley. There are over a dozen options, including some unusual choices like kielbasa and cheese. At lunch, the menu shifts to sandwiches, including the restaurant's famous Coney dogs. The price is a huge draw here, as are the big flavors.
